Arts Award Pathways - writing to Practitioners

Stage 32

For this I will be writing a letter to someone that I want to know more information about and someone who does something similar or the same thing as to what I want to. I am going to show you the message that I sent to Bruce Lucas and show what his reply was.

This is the image of the message that I sent to him. The way I found Bruce Lucas was I went on to Stage 32 and searched for people that are in the producer/director industry, the reason why I wanted to look for people who do this sort of thin is because out of everything in the media industry its what I enjoy the most. I got a reply of Bruce because I want to ask him some questions and he said that he didn't know if he could reply to them but I could ask him.

This is just the image of me searching about producers and directors and this is what came up when I searched it. Lots of people came up at the top and different websites that I could go on about the job in general.

This is a screenshot of me just reading about being a producer or director, it had lots of information on here for example what is involved or what you will have to do to be apart of this. This helped me and its really got me interested in it even more.

This is a screenshot of mainly just information about camera work. Now this is my favorite I really enjoy doing this part in the media industry! I enjoyed doing it at college and got excited to do it every time I knew that I was going to. This is definitely something that I would absolutely love to be involved in!.

Finished video and reviewed

Finished video

My review

This is the final video put together and made into a trailer, I thought that it worked very well and I liked watching it and working with everyone doing the piece. I think that Liam done a very good job at being the survivor and the main part of the whole thing, I think that the script that Kieren  made was really good and made a really good story line for us to do. I think that the edit has been done good and everything has been put into it that we need. I also think the the director Courtney done a really good because the scenes that she had put together for it worked really well with the script.

I think that the part that I had to do was great  I think that I done good at recording it because we got the different angles that we need and the best footage that we could of got to put the work piece together.

At first when I started Middlesbrough College I didn't know how to use the recording cameras so through the year we had bucked them so that we could try to get used to them which I did. Through the year I learned lots more about using the cameras I learned how to get the perfect camera angle and I'm glad with what I leaned at Middlesbrough College. This has give me more of an experience and will most probably help me for the future.

I think that this could be one of my examples why I think that I got good camera shots, I think that this is one the best because it shows you everything how Liam reacts and what he finds. This is mid shot of Liam one of the best shots to use I think because you can see everything.

Feedback Of My Group

This is some feedback that I had got of my team mates that I worked with. I got pretty good feedback from them which I'm glad about and thought that I would of got abit different feedback to that. But this is the feedback that I got of them.

As working as a team at first we had a few production problems to begin with but eventually we got into a rhythm when we made a few failed attempts on our first day of producing the film. I think that we worked well together and got through everything better than I thought. Putting the trailer together with them was really fun we had some laughs but also had to work hard to get everything right. We all agreed with the different sets and scenes that we wanted in the trailer which made it a lot easier to get done.

Parts of the trailer

This is the very first part of the recording that was ever done, this was to start it off we had Jack walking towards liam to indicate to people that the trailer and movie is going to have zombies that are involved. This first bit created the enigma and what it is going to be about. This last for a couple of seconds till the next bit comes on.

This the next bit where Jack (Zombie) is trying to get into the college, normally this is what zombies would do so we done the same thing. We done this to make the trailer and interesting so that it doesn't get boring for the audience to watch. I thought that this bit worked pretty well and when you watch the trailer it works well with it all.

After that bit then this is the next thing that Jack (Zombie) does, here he is walking towards the clock tower where Liam is because he seen him. This is where the tension starts to really begin and where it starts to become more intense but amazing!... For out trailer this is what we put in it so that it doesn't get boring.

This is the main part really of the story, it is Liam sat on the floor after falling over and finding a bad. He finds something inside it that he can use to protect himself against a zombie. This bit is good because it is the way that he will survive and protect him from the zombies that are lurking around him.

This is the very last clip of my trailer it is Jack running across the grass, the reason I put this in is because I wanted to create a cliffhanger for the audience because this normally makes trailers look good. There is always a cliffhanger to ever

Review of how my leadership project has been going so far:

Well I had a full year if learning new things and how to work with different things and to be honest I really learnt a lot if things. I learnt how to improve on my own basic skills and how to make my work better otherwise it wouldn't be as good as my work actually came out to be and I also learnt how to work with others and what it would actually be like in the real industry.

Final review on my project:
Reflection on how my project plan workedEverything worked really well when we started doing it, it flew by as we all knew what exactly what we were doing and that's what I'm really happy with. Another thing that we got was success and I really enjoyed watching the trailer and I hope that everyone else does because I did. As a result we were happy as everything went to plan and the whole thing was ready for when we needed it! So in the end of all this is was very successful and everything went to plan. Everything that we planned worked and as you can see on the photos above we had good screenshots of the different parts that we have in it and how I developed my skills. So the main thing is that it all worked and Im really happy with that! and I hope that everyone else enjoys it.

What do I think are the overall achievements, successes and challenges of  the project?
Well it made me better at things in general like using the camera, working with others etc! That's what I'm really happy with and this will most probably help me towards my future which I'm really really happy about. Doing things like this gets me even more excited and I just can't wait to hopefully carry on with this!. I would say that being in college for the full year I
achieved a lot of things especially on the silver arts award! As there is lots of different things that you have to do in this assingment for example you have to work with different people this is also what I achieved and we had to make our own trailer which worked really well and I loved it! The challenge was amazing and I really had full while doing it and creating our own thing which really helped me towards what I want to do in the future.

What have I learnt about working effectively with others and whatI have learnt from the feedback I received?
I learnt that i done really good by my class and Im really happy with that and also that it is really different working with other people. It actually does really help getting feedback of your peers because it can help you improve on something that they see what you can really improve on which is a really good thing and at the end it could help you get better!  In the end I learnt that it is different working with different people in this type of industry and that it is still quiet hard to do. I got really good feedback of my class so I'm happy with that. In the future I want to carry on with this and prepare for my future.

What would I do differently in future?
There's not anything really that I would do differently in the future because I done what i needed to do I done my best and that's all I could do! All I would say for my future is to carry on and hopefully get even better at what I want to do!.

Testing out the cameras

Testing out the cameras

Today in lesson me and Ryan booked out the cameras and the tripod, the image below is the camera that I used. I tested the camera so that I knew what I was doing and to get used to them.

This is a photo of the camera that I will be using to record our zombie series, it is a Sony HD hxr-mc2000e camera it has really good quality but it is not too difficult to use!!

This is a photo of me in action with the camera, I had to turn it on and see if I was used to everything I need to do for recording and basically if I knew how to use the camera, I also had to try out the tripod to see if I knew how to use that and to get use to using it.

Review of how my leadership project has been going so far:

During this time I developed my skills on using the camera for example I learnt how to turn it on, I learnt how to record and I also learnt how to hold the camera properly so that I wouldn't drop it and brake it as these type of cameras cost a lot of money. I love using the cameras and it will really help me towards my future ahead of me. I also learnt how to get through things much quicker so that I didn't use up to much time because time is needed! And also I made sure that each of us knew what we were doing so that helped as well. Further into the year when I learnt more it really helped.

My Arts Award Leadership Project

Silver Arts Award - Assignment 2

Introduction

This assignment I have decided to create another video with my team mates Kieren and Courtney, for this assignment we will be creating a episodic series. This series is going to be based around zombies and where a group of people would be faced by them. We have some class mates that are going to involved in this series, we will be trying to make more than one episode which will probably happen if it all goes to plan. We all decided that we would call our series 'Dead Zone' and that it is going to have some dark comedy in it and some heart braking moments.

My own Leadership Skills for this project:
My own responsibility for this project is in charge of operating the cameras. This will mean taking charge of making all shots and scenes for the movie, under the guidance of our director who will be Courtney - and of course following the script from our scriptwriter, Kieren, with sound from Ryan and editing from Josh Garrens.

This means that I will need to get to grips with the cameras and tripods at college so I will comfortable with using camera movement, focus and zoom.

As well as the technical and creative skills, I will also need to develop a whole series of extra leadership skills:

I will need to follow instructions from the Director - which should not be too difficult as Courtney is one of my best mates. However, we will have to make sure that we all work well together as a team, that everyone knows what is needed, and to let people know what they need to do if they miss a lesson. I will need to get myself more organised, and make sure my planning and preparation is in on order. The hardest part for me will be not the creative part of using the camera, but to keep my blog up to date, make sure it can be understood, and to develop better reflection and evaluation skills so I can keep checking in as to how the project has been coming along and how I think my leadership skills have been developing.

Action Planning

This is the evidence of what Courtney had made for the action planning, this is basically everything that we need to do and what mainly helped.
We produced this a part of a group discussion. I have also included this little mind map that Made to help get our ideas together:

Production Crew
  • Courtney Fleming - Director
  • Gemma Connor - Camera Woman
  • Kieren Dixon - Screen Writer
  • Nicole Swainston - Zombie
  • Liam Mathis Jamison - Zombie Killer (Nolan)
  • Ryan Allerton - Sound Man
  • Shannon McLean - Zombie
  • Jack Brooks - Zombie

Review of how my leadership project has been going so far:

Good to have a group discussion so that everyone knows what they are working and need to be doing. Feel confident that this project is going to go well!

Locations

Clock Tower - This is near the college and we will be using this location so that we can have the gang fighting the zombies.

The Street - This is going to be in the colleges main entrance, we will be using the street because there will be students in the college with the zombies.

Classrooms - This will be some classrooms in the college, we will be using the classrooms for different shoots for the series.

Corridors - This will also be any corridors in the college and again for different shots so it doesn't get boring in the same places.

Plan

Our plan is to start recording our series on Tuesday (19th May 2015)! Our series is about a young lad who is on his own wondering the hills as he comes closer to the clock tower one of our locations and spots a group of people who are struggling to face the zombies so he gets more scared and paranoid. He then goes and helps the other people as they ask them for his help. They face deady situations and do as much as they can to try to survive the zombie apocalypse. There is some scenes that are upsetting/emotional but most important its going to be epic and have some really exciting parts in it!.

I will also need to get some experience with using the college video cameras, and I will show this in a future post.

Different Sets
Sets that I want to have are going to be different, for the first bit I want to have Liam walking toward the clock tower but because he sees the zombies heading towards him he starts running the fastest that he can. I then want him to fall and sit next to the clock tower and find some kit in a bag that will help him against the zombies. I want a scene where a zombie comes over to him and he has to attack the zombie otherwise he will get bitten and turn into a zombie as well. I then want him see a group of people near Middlesbrough College that he goes to help and then I want a cliffhanger to what happens next. I think that if these work then it will make it a good video, but I also want some clips of Jack who is a zombie so that Liam and the zombies are actually involved too.

Review of how my leadership project has been going so far:

So far the protect has been working really well, I have developed my skills much more on the Sony HD camera that I have been using to record the different scenes in the trailer. I have also been helping others in my team if they have ever got stuck for example if Courtney (Director) didn't know what to do for a different scene then I would help her and then we would all think of what we could actually do.

The project plan worked really well, every idea that we thought of actually got put into the trailer and that's what I didn't really expect but it worked. Really the only problem that we had was that if Courtney didn't know what to do for the certain scene then we would have to think of something that we could do but overall it made our trailer a lot better and made me enjoy it even more.

The overall achievements and the successes that I got is that it mainly worked, all the group conversations that we had putting all the idea together and action plan really helped us by being successful in the end of it and that it all payed off in the end. I enjoyed working with everyone and I enjoyed the experience with working with them in as team and enjoyed all the achievements that we got while working together. In the end everything was successful.

After this I have learnt so much more about different roles in movies/trailers etc. I have found out how to properly use a Sony HD hxr-mc2000e which has actually really helped me for the future as I now have the experience with them. I have also learnt that it is a lot different to a normal group conversation because in serious jobs like this you have a couple of weeks to do the pre-production and actually plan what you are going to do. I have learnt lots during this year and I have really enjoyed it.

From the feedback that I got off everyone I learnt that in this type of position I am quiet good as I got good feedback off everyone and that's what I'm really happy with and I hope to carry on with stuff like this for example with Level 3 Creative Media.

I don't really know what I would do differently in the future because I want to carry on with doing this because I really like being involved with cameras and making mine own videos etc so I'm hoping to carry on with maybe finding something to do to try and get in the media industry.

Watch out evaluation

Evaluation

For my challenge I wanted to do something new and what I have never done before so I decided to make a trailer on Imovie which I have never used before so I learnt how to use that. I think that Imovie was a good thing to use as it helped me with the clips that i could put in it and it helped me where I need to put the text in the trailer etc...

When I started this trailer first what I done is I planned what I wanted it to be about and what exactly I wanted to be on the video, when I thought that I wanted my video to be a comedy and a thriller at the same time I started have a look on YouTube of some clip that I could use so that I could upload it on to Imovie and then edit it by myself and make the trailer that I wanted. I thought of a name that I could call it and I came up with the name  'Watch Out' so I looked at  videos that would suit that name and that look kinda scary. When I done so I then uploaded the video to Imovie and this is what I done step by step.

First of all I started with getting the clips that I wanted for my trailer, the ones that I was looking for were thriller ones so that I could make my trailer look scary and so that it makes my trailer a bit more interesting. I then started to upload them into iMovie so that I could then begin to make my trailer.

This is when I got all of the videos that I wanted and started to put my trailer together, I made my trailer on iMovie. I made it on this because it's the easiest thing to make a trailer on as it has everything that you need on there like the credits and the starting of the trailer so that's the good thing. It's also easier because it sets it out for you step by step you just have to put everything into place. So this is what I done next.
This is the second thing that I done after uploading the clips that I am going to use for my trailer. As you can see this is the main thing on the trailer I added this bit onto it, the affect of this text and background shows you that the movie is obviously going to be scary because of the background, the text and the background music. This was a good thing to use because it makes it look and sound scary which is what I wanted my trailer to do and look like.
This is the third thing that I done I started to then add the clips to my trailer, this is the first one that I had it was a clip of one of the characters walking across the train track. It's in the dark and it has trees around it like she is in the woods maybe trying to get away from someone or something. The image of the clip that I have there indicates that's its going to be scary and that there is a twist to it.

This is the fourth thing that is shown on my movie trailer, it is a girl sat in a chair with ropes around her so that she cant get out of the chair. I think that this was a good bit to choose because as I anted my trailer to be scary well this part creates that scene and suggest that the movie is obviously going to be scary with what is included about this text.

The next view is another bit of text that says 'Based On True Events' this was already on the trailer as I said at the beginning  IMovie helps you put the trailer together and has the text in the places where is best to actually put them you just have to type what you want that piece of text to say which is easy. The effect makes it look scary and the font makes the trailer look creepy as well as scary.

After that piece of text this is then shown, this I say would change the mood to a fantasy one because it has some marvel characters on there so this changes the atmosphere really to the end of this clip... Which you will see when you watch the trailer that I made.

Heres another text bit that says 'DIFFERENT FROM THE REST' this suggests a shock to the trailer like for example while watching this movie something different and strange is going to happen. It creates tension and makes the movie sound and look even better.

These last photos are the other parts that I have in my trailer, as you can see the bits are always continuous and sticks to the theme. I have the credits and then three other parts of the clip in it to finally complete my trailer. The main good thing is that it sticks to the sam theme 'Scary and Intense'. I really like this trailer because everything that I have got in it has actually worked and its been successful. I hope that everyone else likes it too.

Silver arts award event

Silver Arts Award Event

For this part of the Arts Award, I have been asked to make a review of an event. A review is a personal reflection of an event or experience, which combines the facts of what was there, with the reviewer's own opinions, like or dislikes about the event.

My Review:
In today's lesson I went down to the street and I got photos of the things that the Art students created, these are the things that I took a photo of and the ones are better to put on my blog. When we went to the event they had two tables set up either side with the students work that they created so we had to take photos of the work that they have done then put them onto blogger.
On this photo there was two girls drawing a model, and there was other things on the table that they had made which you can see in the photo.
On this photo I took a photo of someones painting and their box with somethings inside it. I took a photo of this because it was one of the best ones that was there.
On this photo I got a photo of someones drawing of a hand and then they annotated it which mean that they just written about the drawing. I think its a good drawing and wanted to show people it.
This photo is another persons drawing that they created and again it is annotated, I also thought that this was another good thing on the display so I thought that I would get a photo of it and put it on here to show people.
This image was at the back of the wall where the last photo was took I took a photo of this because its a photo of everything that has been made by the students in the Silver Arts Award challenge.
Finally the last photo that I took, I took a photo of this because its the one main thing that helps them improve as you give them feedback and tell them what is good and bad about it. I thought that I would also take a photo of this because its colour full and it was how we ended the event by looking at this.

Review
With what I have seen for the event I think that the work that was shown to everyone was amazing and really good. I think that maybe I could of done as good as this? I think that I did try my hardest on my work and im proud of what I done. I think that the event was motivate because it made me want to get more involved with things like this as I actually loved looking at the things that were made by media students!. The main thing out of everything that I have experienced in my first year of college I would love to be involved in recording and getting my self involved in films.

Feedback from other people on my review can be found at the Comments Section at the Bottom of this Post

Visit to BBC

BBC Newcastle

This is the visit to the BBC Newcastle that we had so that we could put it down for our silver arts award as we had to put some sort of job industry into our silver arts award and this is what I got for it. It was a really fun trip and below are the photos that I got on the camera that I used.

I went to BBC Newcastle to ask them some questions that we wanted to know, we got lots of information of them about the radio and I also got some photos and these are what I got.

This is the first photo that I got as we started the tour, the people who are on this photo is everyone who is involved in the BBC Newcastle news and as you can see there is quiet a lot of people who are working for this radio. The wall is very colourful which makes it look good and you also notice it straight away with the bright colours.

This is the second photo that I took, this was a wall that had lots of information about BBC Newcastle. I think that was a good idea because its interesting and it was also another colourful wall what makes you want to read it.

This was the third photo that I took, as you can see it is a set that is made for a kids Television Programme that is in a spaceship. This bit was really interesting as you got to see the set that they use and you could see how they record things etc.

This was the fourth photo that I took of the news room, the desk is where the presenter sits when on live TV.

And finally this was the last photo that I took, we could only choose 6 photos so these are the ones I wanted to show because they are most interesting and the most popular thing in radio.

1) How have you begin finding work in your chosen area?
I have searched about the subject that I would mainly want to do as I really enjoy it.

2) What education and qualifications do you need?
The qualifications that you will need a degree and would have to either have lessons about it in school or even college.

3) What other qualities as a person would you need to succeed in this area?
Probably some of their past experience so that they know exactly what they are doing so that anyone could just get on with whatever there doing.

4) What kind of careers, pathways and opportunities are available in this area of media?
There are lot of opportunities and careers available in this type of industry as it is a really popuar industry as lots people are involved in it and would love to be a part.

For this part of the Arts Award I needed to show research into the kinds of media that I am interested in:

For this I went on a website and seen what was available in this area not only jobs but apprenticeships etc.
There is other websites that tell you more about any job that you want and they tell you how much the job is worth, how many hours and days that you would work etc.

I done this because I would like to be involved with the media industry because I enjoy making things like trailers, posters, animations and many more so this would be a really big opportunity for me to do. This is why I started to look for things to do to find my way to get involved and it helps it also gets me more excited as well.

I got some more feed back of the people in my class and the feedback that i got of them was good so I knew that the work that I done for my silver arts award was good and presentable for other people to look at.

Research

How do you begin finding work in your chosen area?

To start this search I went on to IMDB and search for Tim Burton as he is my favorite director out of everyone else. When I read this I found out a lot of information about him for example how he got to where he is now and what its like for him. I read that "Tim Burton began drawing at an early age, going on to attend the California Institute of the Arts, studying animation after being awarded a fellowship from Disney, for whom he went on to work." I got this of IMDB, this is how he started to get involved with his work and what made him what he is today! Reading this inspired me and hoping to be able to do the same exact as him but a bit different.

What education and qualifications do you need?

To be apart of the film industry it would be good to have a degree in business or film studies as it would be useful for it. For this job you would have to be very creative as you might have the job at making the script or even helping the actors/actresses by telling them what to do and how to say it etc. For the film industry you would need to know how to use a camera for if you are recording the movie and so that you know what exactly you are doing. You can do work experience before you actually get involved to get more of an idea of what you do and to prepare you for the real thing. I found out about film and video editing that it ins't a starting role in the industry and that it is also common for students or graduates to gain some experience in a role such as a runner. But may also build up the experiences in other areas of media production before moving into editing.

What other qualities as a person would you need to succeed in this area?

I think that the qualities that you would need to be successful in this area is to be stuck to the work making sure that you would get everything done. Also by being there to have a good attendance, also even if you can multi- task this is good because you could get much more done. Personal skills that you have would be good for this in general. I think that directors are mostly male because its aimed more at males with it being camera work. But females are involved as well.

What kind of careers, pathways and opportunities are available in this area of media?

In this area of media there are a lot of things that you can get involved with to be honest for example, you could obviously be the director, you could take part in being in different apprenticeships and many more.

If you are a director what else might you do during your career?

If you are involved with being a director then you could do lots of things during your career for example you could travel the world and record in different places, meet new people etc and I think that this would be a great experience.

This is the feedback that I got of everyone that will be shown below
